Taipei Trip Part 1 + Apology to my readers

Sorry about the lack of posting, but when your website is constantly being attacked by virus, it is not fun at all! Ever since I’ve moved out from Worpress hosting I have experienced several virus attacked incidents and causing me to be blacklisted by Google. It was heart breaking because it also affected my subscribers, regular viewers and food bloggers friends which I would like to apologise to them. After some research and work, I found out that it was my theme that is actually causing the issue, so I’ve searched for a new theme and hoping this will give me a new start. So far so good, no more incident until now.

Last few weeks, I took 2 weeks off to attend my best friend wedding in Hong Kong and spent 5 days in Taipei. It was strictly a girl’s trip and probably is my last girl trip Sad smile (international) after I got married. I had a really great time with Miss E, Taipei is the land of night market and street food. I still look at the food pic every now and then to refresh my memory.

A dedicated food blogger like me must always start with plane food. I flew with Qantas in the afternoon so we had the lunch menu and afternoon snack. I also had the privilege to experience the new airbus A380, it was awesome!

Once we arrived Hong Kong, we took the connecting flight straight to Taipei, don’t want to waste one more minute, we were offer a light dinner in the flight to Taipei which is a mini vegetarian pizza with fresh fruit and tea.

The next day we went to National palace museum, Xinyi Place shopping centre and Wufenpu commercial district which is a shopping haven for the ladies. Before heading to Wufenpu we needed to refresh ourselves with snack from the food court in Xinyi place.

We end the night at Raohe Street Night Market, my favourite night market because it has full of foods! A lot of funky foods that I’ve never heard of tried. First stop is the famous pepper pastry, it is easy to spot and right next to the entrance. One of my favourite food in the whole trip.

Deep fried milk

We lined up for this deep fried milk because all the travel blog was raving about it, the oil looks really clean and it is deep fried to order. It was piping oil and doesn’t really taste like milk, rather it taste like melted cheese with a hint of sweetness.

We were all exhausted and was carrying too many shopping bags, we took a taxi home then took a rest. Not long later we were starving and walk over to another night market which is just few street away from our hotel for our 2nd dinner.

Hong Kong Eat Out – Part 2

If you have follow my Hong Kong eat out part 1, here is more to come…during the time I was in Hong Kong, I discovered a really nice bakery/pastry place – Arome. I believe they are owned by Japanese, the taste and texture is very similar to Savoy in here. I especially love their chestnut cake also known as Mont Blanc, a dessert of pureed, sweetened chestnut topped with whipped cream, I am not a big fan of sweet things but this is one of my favourite dessert in the world.

Hui Lau Shan www.hkhls.com

After a long walk around the streets, we needed some refreshment. We spotted a distinctive red and gold sign, there is the Hui Lau Shan. Hui Lau Shan was opened 50 years ago specializing Chinese style dessert such as herbal jellies, sago and fresh fruit drinks.

Yee Shun Milk Company

You must try Yee Shun Milk Company if you would like to enjoy some local fare. Famous dessert here includes steam milk curd, French toast, steam egg. You can eat it cold or warm with the dessert, I personally find the hot one more outstanding.

We had dinner in Causeway Bay, I don’t remember the name of the restaurant now but I came here for a purpose, it is the BBQ roast Goose ! I never tried Yung Kee, which is renowned for its roast goose, but this place was fantastic! Taste similar to duck but with much more flavours, skin was extremely crispy that I couldn’t stop myself from eating.

The next day, we continue our eating journey. Typical HK style café for breakfast is a must, including pineapple bun, hot milk tea, satay beef with vermicelli, sunny side up with sausage and ham nomnomnom.

Tsim Jai Kee

Wonton noodle soup in here is so awesome, big portion and reasonable priced. The menu has English, Chinese and Japanese, you can imagine how many tourist visit this place.

Hong Kong Eat Outs – Part 1

Hai all! Sorry for being quiet for a while, there was some personal family issue which I had to fly back to HK urgently. About 3 weeks ago, my grandpa passed away. He was 93 at that time and the last time I saw him was 2 years ago. My grandpa has lived a remarkable life, he was a great grandpa and a great dad to my mum. My grandpa pursued his many endeavours diligently, and always rose to meet challenge, he used to own shares in a restaurant which from my memories, we always go there yum cha on a weekend. My grandpa lived in Wan Chai for all of his life ever since he relocated to HK so therefore I had a lot of food and restaurant memories in the HK Island. Grandpa, may you rest in peace & I love you forever and always.

Combining in a few posts, I would like to take you to some of the good food experiences I had in HK during the 2 weeks I was there, a lot of them are my comfort food and foods that I grew up with.

??? Café De Coral – Wan Chai

1st day of arrival, we grab a quick bite in Café De Coral, It is one of the major Chinese fast food chain which I highly recommend. As you may know, to try the local restaurant is not always easy because of language barrier and menu is in Chinese. In here, all menu are hang on the wall with Chinese on top & English on the bottom, most of them even have picture next to it (of course it is for reference only). Be warn though, this place is extremely fast pace, once you order take your ticket and line up to collect your food straight away.

??? Egg puff – Wan Chai

A very popular street snacks in HK, originated in the 1950s. It is made out of eggs, sugar, flour and evaporated milk cooked into an iron mold. Outside is hot and crispy, inside is soft like a pillow. Nowadays, you can find different flavours like chocolate, green tea etc. but I like the original better!

???? Tack Hsin Restaurant – Tsim Sha Tsui

For some odd reason, HK people like to have hot pot 365 days in the year, no matter is 13 degree or 35 degree, I finally understand why hot pot is also my favourite too. I guess it’s a cultural thing. The air conditioning is so strong indoor that you can have a hot pot anytime you want. Tak Hsin is a popular place for hot pot and has several branches in the Kowloon & HK Island. Just the soup base there are 15 to choose from, we opted for a non-spicy meat base soup – beef brisket with white radish. It was sweet & delicious. This is a buffet style hot pot where you can tick off the dish you like and quantity you want on a piece of paper, several instance the waitress missed the order but doesn’t matter we just re-tick that again in the next round…

Massive range of condiments made me gone crazy, my beloved coriander, garlic, chilli, XO sauce, sesame oil. Mix your own sauce and the food is just about to come. We ordered mountain of foods, my favourites were fish paste noodle & deep fried fish skin!! Yummy!

Forgot to mention this was also a reunion night with my cousins, which one of them – Julia, we haven’t met for 10+ years ever since I moved to Sydney from Canada. It was a lovely gathering and I wish I could see her again soon.

?? So sweetTsim Sha Tsui

A Good night is not complete without dessert, so we were walking around TST trying to find Honeymoon Dessert, which is a very famous dessert chain store but end up we find So Sweet. It was a very random find but I felt very lucky that we end up here because the dessert here is so awesome!

This store is open by a HK television actor call Wong Cho Lam, he graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for performing arts, and he is one talented individual. Although he doesn’t have a good looking face but because of his kind heart he managed to steal’s Leanne Li heart who is now his girlfriend. She is Miss Chinese international Pageant winner from Vancouver…anyway, enough of gossip.

So sweet is famous for fusion dessert, mixture of Chinese/western dessert in one plate. The menu has like over 10 pages (Just dessert!) and we had a difficult times choosing it. We ordered 4 desserts and share among us. Mango sticky dumplings was heavenly good, chewy and thin like paper sticky rice wrap around sweet mangoes, top with designated coconut, one each is just not enough!

Secondly came the mango shaved ice with explosive pearl balls. The moment you bite on them it burst out some juice, just like eating fish roe but in a sweet form… That is freaking creative I must say! Then come 3rd was another mango shaved ice but with vanilla ice-cream & herbal jelly this time. Lastly and my favourite was the chocolate fondant with green tea ice-cream. One of the best Chocolate fondant I have eaten, not overly sweet or biter, moist and gooey in the inside. Love it!
