Ever since my nephew was born, it’s a real mission to find a spacious and pram friendly café whenever we are catching up for coffee. Not far away from Pyrmont there is a nice café inside a heritage building with excellent water views right next to the Anzac Bridge. Despite of the nice view and environment the food and service was not so impressive, menu was very limited and it was a long wait before someone attended to us.

I’ve chosen the bake beans because it was a homemade bake beans rather than canned one, it was a huge disappointment because the beans was extremely salty, I almost wanted to take it home and reconstructed it by adding small amounts of brown sugar. At the end I couldn’t finish it…

I love steak and can never resist a good piece of steak, when my friend told me she wanted to shout me for my belated birthday dinner at The Cut Bar and Grill I was so excited! She said the 4 hours slow roast Wagyu was to die for, and it didn’t disappointed me at all. The restaurant is located at heart of the rocks right next to the Sake restaurant, parking there can be quite hectic so best to dine in early or catch a public transport.

I was a bit worried firstly because of deem lighting in the restaurant, which is greatest enemy of my food pictures. Thanks to my hubby who bought me a new Cannon EOS M and it behaved so well that even without flash, the picture still looks great! All the pictures in the post were taken by my new EOS M.

Prime beef tartare with melba toasts, $24

There wasn’t a lot of options on the menu, which is good and bad…  Sometimes less is better. I let my friend picked most of the dishes and she suggested to try the beef tartare. For someone who always like their steak to be cooked medium suddenly was offered to try raw beef could be a bit too adventurous for me, but it wasn’t that bad after all! It was chewy at the start and slowly melts in your mouth, you eat it with the different spices and condiments which I believed were capers, fresh herbs, pickle and Spanish onion.

4 hour slow roast sher F1 Wagyu standing rib, standard cut 300g, $45

I was looking forward the most to try this piece of steak, it looks a bit too raw when the waiter brings us the dish, but when I cut it with my knife and try my first bite it was so delicious and tender, full of flavours and there was a lot of the juice on the plate to keep the meat moist. Both me and my friend ordered the same main course, both huge and we could barely finished half of it.

I choose this salad because I’ve never tried a soft duck egg, it tasted slightly richer than chicken eggs and was a perfect match with the garlic croute.

We would love to try the dessert but was just too full. There is always next time!

Service was awesome. They frequently checked on us but not too pushy. We dined for 3.5 hours but we were never rushed to finish our meal. The manager also gave us 2 glasses of complimentary champagne, I definitely hope to come back someday.

Engagement & Christmas at Aria

It’s been more than 2 months since I last blogged. I am terribly sorry my lovely readers! I have been trying hard to write again but seems like finding time was the hardest thing on earth. Things was crazy and multiple things happening at the same time, also my laziness made things even worse =(

Allow me to explain some of the things that happened. Well, firstly and most importantly, I got engaged! Yay! And prior do that JC moved house so meaning lots of packing and unpacking happened during the past months. It was a huge exercise for us because he has been living in the old place for 4 years so you can imagine how many junks there were, some are still remain untouched now and safely sitting in the balcony hehe.

So yeah, back to engagement bit, on August 6th it was on our 2nd year anniversary of dating, we planned to go to Quarter 21 for dinner to celebrate this special day. But because of the sad news about my grandpa, the dinner didn’t eventuate and postponed to September after I came back from Hong Kong. The poor JC even booked a hotel room and was planning to give me a pleasant surprise but that part of the plan was ruin…. Anyway…

On the day, we went out to the city spent the day doing some shopping. He suggested to go to observatory towel as he has never been there, I immediately rejected the idea because I thought it was a bit of a waste of money (I’ve officially ruined the first proposal plan A), then it’s finally our booking time for dinner, nothing happened during the dinner as JC thought proposing in the restaurant was too ordinary (Plan B didn’t happen). And then, after dinner we walked back to Pyrmont where we parked our car, he suggested to take a monorail as it’s getting late. Luckily, I said yes (or else I will ruin the Plan C) as my feet hurts as a result of all the walking today.

Up to here, you can pretty much guess what happened! In the monorail, only two of us in one carriage, things started getting weird, JC started talking about relationship and the time we have been together in a not so fluent Chinese…one knee on the floor with a ring in his hands, and me burst out laughing but happy and shocked at the same time, he proclaim his love for me and was asking me to marry him. Of course I said yes and we are getting married in May =)

So you see, I was absent from blogging for a good reason. To make up my bad, I promise I will try my best to keep blogging for good restaurants and recipes. As you know, Christmas is coming, I would love to share some of my favourite dishes I tasted in Aria during my work Christmas party last week. If you have followed my older post, I have been to Aria in June and it didn’t disappointed me, food is still amazing.

We were given three choices for Entrée, main & dessert, it was a clear choice because I’ve tried some of the things on menu in the last visit.

The best thing for me was the crispy pork belly and barramundi, it was cooked perfectly with a nice crispy skin. The dishes were in reasonable size and I can still fit dessert without feeling overly bloated.

Aria Restaurant, Circular Quay

 

If you follow this season’s Master Chef, you will notice Matt Moran was one of the guest judges on the judge panel. I was over the moon when I heard that our business partner BTIG is bringing us to Aria restaurant located opposite of the opera house for lunch. The whole time during one of the pressure test, where contestants have to recreate Matt Moran’s duck consommé dish with abalone, I would rave about how creative it is to have a dish that has Asian influence but in a form of soup that made by a non-Asian chef.

When we first walked in, the receptionist greeted with a friendly smile and took us to the table. The restaurant was very “corporate” style, I wouldn’t say it’s a very nice décor and most people were having a business lunch as you can tell by their corporate attire. We were given a seated close to the window with fabulous views of Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

We decided to go for the 2 courses for $68. As much as I would love to try the dessert too but I think my little stomach will struggle a little bit.

A complimentary amuse bouche is served to us to start off, it is a wild mushroom and asparagus soup. Although I am not a big fan of asparagus but I couldn’t taste any of it, but instead I can taste a dash of sweetness that came from the mushroom.

Peaking duck consommé with duck dumplings, shaved abalone and mushrooms

As mentioned before, how can I go pass a dish that has been feature in a Master Chef pressure test? So I opted for the duck consommé. The bowl came out to the table covered and once it is placed in front of me the waiter lifted off the lid allowing the aroma to come through the nose. I can’t wait no more! First spoonful was boiling hot with intense flavours. Floating on the top was some coriander and herbs which further raise this soup to a whole new level. The dumplings itself was a bit soggy but overall was very nice. I wouldn’t consider this as a traditional Chinese dish because I’ve never taste anything like that before.

Nadia ordered the scallops and she claim that it was cooked perfectly. I didn’t try this dish but from the look of it, I can tell the scallop was just cooked through with a nice brown surface.

I never thought you could put a tea together with a salmon. But the presentation was very beautiful, almost too beautiful to eat. Down side was a bit small to feed a big eater.

Pork Belly – Kurobuta sweet pork belly with pickled watermelon and crackling

Few other people ordered the pork belly, the skin looks perfectly crisp. At the end of the meal I noticed that most people left the watermelons on the plate unfinished.

Braised beef cheek with red onion choucroutte, roasted chestnut and puff wild rice

I ordered the beef as the main. Despite that I was half full already but I still managed to finish the whole dish. Because it is just so good!! I didn’t know what purpose the puff wild rice served initially but after a bite of the meat I understand that the puff rice can lighten the richness of the sauce and offer some crunchiness to the dish. The meat itself was tender and fall off the bone.

I rarely ordered fish as my main in a restaurant, purely because none of them impressed me but this one in Aria totally changed my view. It is very hard to cook a fish right but Aria did it. The fish was moist and juicy. It felt like it melts in the mouth. The skin was absolutely amazing and crispy.

All of the people on the table either order fish, beef or lamb. I didn’t get a taste of the lamb but it looks perfectly cook still with a little bit pink in the middle.

Conclusion: Unbeatable location and excellent food. The service was impeccable, they gave us attention to our needs throughout the meal. I would definitely order the dessert next time when I come here because it looks absolutely delicious looking at the table next to us.

Before writing up a post on this restaurant, I need to let all my readers know that I am not the biggest fan of buffet. Firstly, I wouldn’t get my monies worth in buffet as I eat small quantity. Secondly, the quality of food is generally poor. Thirdly, I usually lost appetite when I see so many choices in front of me.

We were here for a post mother’s day celebration dinner with my family and my brother’s in laws. With eleven of us, I suppose buffet would be the best choice to cater for the oldies, young and kids. There were two session with the dinner: 5:30pm – 7:30pm or 7:30pm – 9:30pm, we were in the earlier session so I also get to take handful of pictures of the food before being destroyed by others.

Star Buffet like most of other buffet is located inside a RSL club, it offers great variety of gourmet food ranging from Australian, Asian, European, even a sushi train, roast BBQ duck/pork plus extensive selection of salads and desserts. I must say this is a really sweet value for what you get if you compare to the Casino Star City Garden Buffet.

My favourite was the BBQ roast duck as it was freshly roasted in house and not those that bought from supplier. It was tender and delicious and they carve it in front of you.

Make sure you leave room for dessert because I bet you can only sample a few, although the cakes that I tried didn’t have much taste but I only tried a few things. The focal point was definitely the chocolate fountain as it attracts many kids to line up for it. Instead of dipping the ordinary marshmallow I have substitute with fruits instead and I thought it tasted great!!

Not long after, the chef starts to bring out some nice tiny crème brulee. OMG , anyone who knows me would know that my favourite dessert is crème brulee and I was very impress that they had it here. I took one back to my table and can’t wait to crack the sugar on top. It was very creamy and fresh but the brulee itself was lacking the punch of vanilla bean and taste a bit too eggy.

I had a really good night and catch up with my family even though I didn’t eat much, but it was equally enjoyable watching my family demolish about 20 plates of foods.

Conclusion: The variety of food is quite extensive and you are paying for a buffet that offers a lot of different things. Strongly recommend for big eater or families with kids.

One thing I love about my job is I am always lucky enough to get invited to work lunches or dinners. Early this week, our broker from work was very kind to take us for an evening out. Being a food blogger, of course I have a duty to fulfilled which is to blog about the restaurant but was also assigned the task to pick the venue. It was not an easy task, not only I have to look at the environment, the price, the taste but also the type of food and dietary requirement for everyone.

Some of the challenge I had to face were:

– Nice décor

– Satisfy bunch of meat lovers

– No Indian or Japanese

– Spacious seat for 6 people and fully licensed restaurant

– In the City CBD

– No art on the plate

– 5 out of 6 are male , so meaning big portions and not much greens

Here are just only a few points to mentioned, to cut the story short, Meat & Wine co. is ideally located in darling harbour right next to IMAX, the view was great as we were sitting next to the window with a water view. The décor was gorgeous but lighting was a bit dark for my photograph purpose.

Mixed Bread Platter – Garlic, Herb and Bruschetta, $20

This is the most expensive garlic bread and Bruschetta I’ve ever tasted but also one of the best one. It is different to other that I’ve tried because the bread is so crunchy and thick that feels like a brioche rather than an ordinary piece of bread. The Bruschetta was absolutely gorgeous with heaps of fresh herbs, tomato, feta and vingerette dressing. I know this is only an appetizer, but I’m happy to eat this as a main.

Boerewors Skewer – Skewered and char-grilled traditional African mini beef sausages and onions. Served with pap (polenta) and BBQ relish, $27

Boerewors is a sausage, popular in South African cuisine. It is made from coarsely minced beef and spices such as coriander seed, black pepper, nutmeg and cloves and is preserved with salt and vinegar. This is the first time I tried Boerewors, It was OK the inside was quite rich and dry. I’d still prefer a Chorizo thou.

Portuguese Prawns – Succulent shelled prawns, pan-fried with golden eschalots and creamy Portuguese sauce. Served with steamed jasmine rice, $17

Prawns was served in a very Asian style with steam jasmine rice in the middle, the prawn alone was fresh and perfectly cooked but I just think the sauce doesn’t match the definition of “Portuguese”

Chicken Wings – BBQ chicken wings served with blue cheese sauce, $13

I am a big sucker of chicken wing but also someone who hates blue cheese, it turns out the combination work out great! I can hardly taste the strong blue cheese taste. Meat itself was marinated with lots of sauce, moist, and falls off the bone with a really good flavor.

Caesar Salad – Cos lettuce, egg, bacon and Parmigiano shavings tossed with our Chef’s traditional Caesar dressing and finished with crispy garlic croutons, $16

Surprise … Surprise… There is some green for the table and I absolutely adore this salad and do love the whole leaf salad presentation.

Monte select (Grain-fed 120 days) Rib-eye 350g with mushroom sauce, $38

Toward the middle of the night, service was lacking and the order was messing up a bit. The Rib-eye was requested to be book medium but a lot of blood is on the surface. This was sent back and lucky it turn outs perfectly.

Wagyu (Grain-fed 500 days) rib-eye 300g with mushroom sauce and mash, $59

Wagyu was requested to be cook in medium-rare but turn outs to be a medium, so we all thought this has been mixed up with the rib eye.

Signature cut (Grain-fed 130 days) Monte gold fillet 250g char-grilled and served with mushroom and truffle butter, hand-cup chips and roasted vine ripened cherry tomato, $55

We ordered a serve of onion rings to share around the table, it was a disappointing one because the chef just literally fried the ring with a batter without putting too much seasoning or removing the onion skin.

Yoghurt marinated lamb cutlets, flame-grilled and served with Mediterranean couscous (replace with mash), tomato and cucumber salsa and mint and coriander yoghurt, $36

I gave one extra point for the lamb because I don’t eat couscous and the waiter happily substituted it with the mash. Presentation wise was good and portions was generous. Someone was having fun with the kitchen grill and burnt my lamb, as you can see in the picture the meat was over burnt giving an unpleasant bitterness burnt taste. Also, I asked for a medium and it turn out to be a well done.

Crème Brulee – Crème brulee infused with Madagascar vanilla bean. Served with strawberries and finished with a tuile biscuit, $12

I love crème brulee and still trying to find the best one in Sydney. No luck, the crème brulee in here is tasteless, the sugar crack was lovely and the strawberry and the sauce match it perfectly. Despite I can see a lot of vanilla bean in the crème but I didn’t taste any.

Conclusion: Good decor and environment, although I believe you can get better tasting steak that’s bigger and more reasonable priced elsewhere. On the positive side, the menu choices do provide diversity and food for the kids.  Bit let down on the service as the wait staff did not smile, everything seemed to be a hassle and not attentive.

Ho Ho Ho! It’s this time of the year again – when you see me eating continuously everyday and celebrating the festive day with work colleagues and friends to different restaurants. My company have organised a lovely day out for us in Sergeants Mess in Chowder Bay for this Christmas. The restaurant is located on Chowder Bay road in the middle head Peninsula below Georges Heights, Mosman. It is owned and operated by Manuel Spinola, of the tea room Gunners Barracks and Dunbar House Watsons Bay.

I must say this place is absolutely beautiful and natural because it is surrounded by National Park and waters. Prior to the sit down menu we were offer with canapés and drink. I can’t help but to keep taking pictures of the water view and the harbour.

Sear king fish sashimi with seaweed in vinaigrette dressing

Fresh king fish lightly seared on the outside. The Vinaigrette dressing and seaweeds brought a subtle, clean and flesh flavours that enhanced the sweetness of the fish.

Vegetarian menu: Spiced chickpeas crepe, with brocollini and almonds

I got best seat of the day because I sat next to a girl who is vegetarian so I get to take pics of what she was eating as well as sitting opposite of another colleagues who ordered exactly the opposite as I did in an alternate serving menu.

Vegetarian menu: Pan fried Gnocchi with tomato, eggplant and basil

Gnocchi looks very chewy but my colleague said it was lack of seasoning and wasn’t as good as expected.

This dessert looks like an art with fresh strawberries and a refreshing sorbet to welcome the summer

Prawn Tortellini, grilled octopus, tomato and lemon dressing

This was the highlight of the night I reckon, Tortellini was visually attractive to start with. Pasta skin is cook to perfect with flavours bursting into my mouth after the first bite. Octopus was grill to a smoky finish and pair well with the tangy lemon dressing. I wish this was a main course size rather than an entrée.

Rabbit looks like it was perfectly cook with lots of fresh herbs.

Char grilled scotch fillet, eschalot & green beans, béarnaise sauce

I love scotch fillet. The best out of all parts in a beef, this one was slightly undercooked still having lots of red in the middle. Looking at another table someone’s has an overcooked steak even though we weren’t given a choice of how we want our steak to be. Weird thing is my steak wasn’t cook on the top so I strongly believe it was cook in a whole then slice into piece afterward which wasn’t fitting into my liking.

On the other hand, the pork maybe a better option with a silky smooth puree.

This is not for the faint hearted, chocolate mousse was so rich that my heart almost clotted for a second. But then the raspberry was overly sour so I was like being toss around heaven and hell.

Conclusion: Canapés and entrée was impressive but disappointed me a little bit in the main and dessert. Lovely ambience with great water view. Perfect for wedding or group functions.

Hurricane’s Grill & Bar Top Ryde Opening December

Just a quick post here, for the Hurricane’s Grill fans, guess what? I have received an email from the management team the wait is finally over! Hurricane’s Gril Top Ryde is officially open for dinner as of tonight 2nd February 2011.

It will be open for lunch (from 3rd February) and dinner 7 days a week
Lunch: 12:00 – 15:00
Dinner: 17:30 – late.
Please note that they do not take reservation via email. For reservations or booking queries you can contact 02 9130 7101 between 10 am to 6 pm.

A while ago, plenty of advertisement on career website as the new restaurant are still trying to recruit a Restaurant Manager and floor and bar staff. The new Top Ryde shopping centre is located on the corner of Devlin Street and Blaxland Road, Ryde, is at the centre of it all. With options at every point of the compass, public transport at the doorstep, and access to over 2,000 undercover car parking spaces I think you should come and visit the restaurant soon!

The A$1.2 billion Sydney Westfield finally opened last week located under Sydney Tower between Pitt Street Mall, Castlereagh Street and Market Street. I have joined the crowd to try the latest creation of Justin North – Charlie & Co. One of the Sydney highest profile chef whom is also owner of Becasse, Etch, Plan B and Le Grand Café. Burgers are no longer a fast food thing, Justin North has designed a menu that maintains the integrity of premium, fresh produce, all locally sourced to create a flavoursome and juicy burger like no other. In saying that, I will be comparing the burgers with Grill’d because it is still my no. 1 favourite burger place.

I must say, it was an expensive lunch. Five of us bought a total of four burgers and three chips to share, total bill of $86.

Burgers are all delicately made with the finest ingredients, looking from the glass window I can clearly see the ingredients they put in. from tomato salsa to lettuce and the mayo and buns. They operate like a Subway and systematically pass the burger to the person to the right for the next step.

The Wagyu & Co. Burger – Wagyu Burger with beetroot relish, pickled gherkin and aged cheddar on a toasted brioche bun, $16

The Wagyu Burger was clearly the most popular burger. At first glance, the portion seems lean but the big flavours make up for size. The meat patty was just right, not overly lean or fat. It comes with the aged cheddar nicely melted on top, with the mayo oozing out on the first bite was just amazing.

The Rustic Chorizo Classic – Pork burger infused with smoked paprika, chorizo and fennel, with soft peppers and fried egg on a toasted brioche bun, $16

I opted for the Chorizo classic, I really like the original idea of a pork burger combining chorizo and egg. It was just gigantic and I could only ate half. Inside was a thick pork patty with two chorizo and a fried egg. The fried egg was a little bit over cooked and the meat was too lean for me. But bags and bags of flavours coming from the paprika and grilled capsicum was just awesome.

The Laden Malayan Chicken Burger – Infused with cumin, coriander, chilli, galangal, shrimp paste and satay sauce on a sesame bun, $15

I didn’t get to taste the Malayan Chicken but my friend said it was beautiful.

The fries was not as good as the Grill’d because I think it was a bit overly fried and some of them are quite chewy and hard.

Parmesan and truffle fries, $8

The truffle fries was beautiful although I don’t know the little white stuff on top is truffle or mainly parmesan.

 

Conclusion: Overall, I think it was a good try. The burger here are slightly smaller compare to Grill’d but for a higher price. The bread are soft but not toasted. This is also another thing which I don’t like about. But in terms of flavours I think they nailed it. I also don’t have the bloated and oily feeling after the meal, which was a good sign. But keep in mind you will be dining at a food court environment but paying a higher price.

Café opera, InterContinental Hotel

My first time to a bridal shower and my first time experiencing high-tea in a grand hotel Thanks to Maria and Vicki and everybody else who have helped and organised this lovely high-tea gathering in Café Opera of InterContinental Hotel. On a Wednesday afternoon I have the privilege to have half day off work and attend this special day of Kamila – my lovely bride-to-be colleague. Make sure you come with an appetite because this is one superb high-tea with impeccable service.

The waiters and waitresses were very formal and well presented. They were very attentive and offer us champagne to start with. Not long after, the 3 tier high tea stand arrived. There were HEAPS of foods! I came without having lunch but still couldn’t finish my shares at the end. To start, there were savoury bacon and onion quiches, ham and cheese sandwiches and mini beef pies at the bottom layer. The quiche was devine as the pastry was really buttery and a little bit flaky, the size is a bite size so I didn’t feel overly bloated. It was a great way to start the meal.

Second layer was the sweet stuffs, mini macaroons, strawberry chocolates, chocolate mousse cake and mini connoli. The dessert was not overly sweet but however, was a bit dry and hard to chew. In fact, we packed away few boxes of dessert and take home.

The top layer was the classic scones served with fresh cream and jam. I was so full that I didn’t try the scones but it looks a bit tough to bite. Seems like we didn’t have enough and soon again, 3 plates of crepes and waffles came out with syrup. I had half of the waffle with syrup but it was a bit disappointing given the inside is like a solid rock. Our teas arrive the end of our afternoon tea, we’re all completely full by the time we’ve eaten our portions, the crepes and waffle remained untouched.

Conclusion: I had the great pleasure to attend the high tea in Café Opera that was organised by Maria & Vicki. The service was immaculate and I felt like I was treated like royalty. Staffs are friendly and helpful and even assisted in taking a group photo of us. Food wise, savoury are better than the sweets. What I love though is the high ceilings, beautiful lounge and quiet environment which allows us to talk freely without shouting across the table.
